Nearest Green (full name Nathan “Nearest” Green) was an enslaved man who later became a free master distiller in Tennessee, and he’s recognized as the first known African American master distiller in the U.S.
He’s most famous for his connection with Jack Daniel. In the mid-1800s, Jack learned the art of distilling whiskey from Nearest Green while working on Reverend Dan Call’s farm. Green taught Daniel the charcoal mellowing process (now known as the Lincoln County Process) that defines Tennessee whiskey.
Today, Nearest Green’s legacy is honored through:
